Milwaukee Pride strongly believes that coming out still matters.
On Tuesday, October 11, we will honor National Coming Out Day with our first-ever BeOUT Milwaukee celebration! Join us in welcoming the NOH8 Campaign, our internationally recognized Proud Partner, as we join forces to promote the power of LGBTQ visibility.
What is BeOUT Milwaukee? It’s a day to be seen, be heard, and be OUT in the community for who you are and what you believe in. It’s a day to show our pride in how far we’ve come — and honor how we got here!
How does BeOUT Milwaukee work?
- Check in at 5 p.m. at our BeOUT headquarters, the gorgeous new South Second (838 S. 2nd St.) where you can pick up your neighborhood map, enter our BeOUT prize drawing, and enjoy a cash bar and complimentary desserts, as well as the DJ sounds of 88nine Radio Milwaukee's DJ Dori Zori!
- Explore and support the local merchants, restaurants and bars of Historic Walker’s Point. Choose your own adventures — dinner, shopping or bar-hopping — in this diverse and dynamic neighborhood!
- Enjoy free neighborhood walking tours at 5:30 and 6:30, courtesy of Historic Milwaukee, Inc. Advance registration is required at https://goo.gl/forms/IqdZMonHIpfozl7Z2
- Take a stand against discrimination and bullying — schedule your very own NOH8 Protest Photo. (PHOTO SHOOT INFO: http://bit.ly/noh8beout)
- Join Milwaukee Pride, PFLAG Milwaukee and our Proud Partners at 8 P.M. for a community reception, as we award our first-ever BeOUT Award for LGBTQ Visibility.
No admission tickets are required for this progressive event; however, a nominal NOH8 Campaign donation is required for an official photo.
At 8 P.M. Tuesday, the Milwaukee Pride Board of Directors will honor the winners of the first-ever BeOUT Awards for LGBTQ Visibility. This award honors an individual or organization who has elevated image, reputation and awareness of LGBTQ people, culture, history and critical community needs within the past calendar year.
This year's honorees are:
Miltown LGBT Families: Founded in February 2016, this group has done tremendous work in elevating the voice and visibility of parents within the LGBT community, and connecting individuals into a strong and resilient parenting support network that, in turn, makes the city and its children that much healthier, stronger and whole.
Julie Tarney: As author of "My Son Wears Heels," Huffington Post blogger, and board member of the It Gets Better Project, Julie provides relentless support for parents of gender non-conforming, non-binary, trans and queer children. Although few parenting resources existed when Julie began her journey, she has become the change she needed to see in the world.
We’ve selected Historic Walker’s Point as our BeOUT destination neighborhood. Known as the social center of Milwaukee’s LGBTQ community for decades, Walker’s Point is more than just bars. The neighborhood is experiencing a remarkable renaissance that has added vibrant, nationally-recognized new restaurants, unique and eclectic merchants, and stunning new working and living spaces to the landscape.
Many thanks to our project partners 88nine Radio Milwaukee, Historic Milwaukee, Inc., PFLAG Wisconsin and the NOH8 Campaign for making BeOUT Milwaukee possible.
